The Origin

This style was of course originally started by coastal grandmothers everywhere, but like many trends right now, Tik Toker’s originally coined the term and are sporting this look both on the feeds and off. It was first used by influencer Lex Nicoleta, who was bringing to light the looks of Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give and Meryl Streep in It’s Complicated. Think classic poplins worn by Ina Garten and color inspiration from floral arrangements seen in Living Magazine. It is chic without the fuss and luxury without the discomfort. What would you wear to walk on the beach? Well, now you can wear it everywhere with this new trend. Thank you Tik Tok.

The Fabrics

The Coastal Grandmother trend has been the perfect reminder that elegance is often found in simplicity. The fabrics and styles used to achieve this look are effortless and timeless. Think linen pants, soft knit cardigans, loose flowy dresses, oversized oxfords, big straw hats, and bags. You will see simple canvas sneakers and tote bags making a huge comeback, so pull out the L.L Bean Bag that you only use for picnics and boating days, and start carrying it around as your everyday purse. You won’t be the only one doing it this summer!

The Color Palette

Using flowers your grandmother may have grown in her backyard is a perfect inspiration for dressing this trend. Soft pink, orange, and yellow pastels paired with neutrals like cream, white, khaki and navy are the overarching palettes to reach for when pairing looks together. You will also see smaller floral prints as well coming in these colorways and classic striping in sweaters and shirting. The last few summers have been all about bold, colorful prints but things are looking a little more muted and softer this summer and most certainly into fall.
