Lessons Learned from Quarantine Parenting

Lizzi Benton

Meet Lizzi, a Jackie Stylist and a new mom who is learning the ins and outs of parenting. She leans into advice from other moms as she shares lessons she has learned from parenting during the pandemic.

As a parent, you want your child to experience the world for all that it's worth, but what happens when you are raising your kids in a global pandemic? School, playdates and social interactions have now been put on pause. As a parent, how do we pivot and adapt the changing times? Let’s get back to the basics as I unpack my top three tips for parenting during quarantine.

Give Yourself Grace

NEWS FLASH! You can only do the best you can with the situation you are facing. There is not a manual or a cheat sheet to help you navigate this time. As a parent, you are giving yourself fully to so many other people which can be emotionally, and physically draining. Take a deep breath! Look in the mirror and remind yourself that you are resilient. Your children are resilient and there is grace sufficient for you with or without quarantine.

Learn Something New

I hope that you have been able to spend more time with your family during this season. I hope that you have learned something new about your spouse, your children and perhaps even yourself! I encourage you to cultivate a space where you can explore something for the first time with your children. Maybe it’s a new evening stroll that will become a beloved tradition. Maybe you discover a new card game that allows you to connect with your teenager. Maybe it’s even letting the older kids cook dinner for you one night. These “something new” moments will be ones that leave an imprint on both you and your children. They will shape your family dynamic and serve as a beautiful reminder of the season that we are all in.

Lead With Love

At the end of the day, we can all agree that these times are unpredictable. Despite the changes we are facing, one constant is your ability to show and demonstrate your love for your children. Choose to think outside the box as you lead your family in love. In our family we love to speak declarations over each other. This can be as simple as sharing what you love about each other or an encouraging word. We love to tuck our daughter into bed and say that she is brave, she is smart, she is beautiful and she is kind. Our hope is that she will understand the love we have for her and rest in confidence as she goes to sleep. The sense of security you are providing for your children in a time of such uncertainty is sure to bring comfort and peace to your entire family.

My hope for you in this season that you dive deep into the joys of parenting, even in quarantine. Be bold. Be innovative and we will all come out stronger because of it. Even when things feel insurmountable, you are strong and you will get through this!
