Is There Really Anything to be Thankful For?

We can all agree that 2020 has flown by. The holidays always seem to come and go in the blink of an eye, but this year, the transition feels even more abrupt. This year has come with an incredible set of challenges, from COVID, to the election, we have all felt some level anxiety as a result of what is going on around us. It leads me to ask the question, what could we possibly be thankful for this year? More importantly, how do we express gratitude for such a dark, bitter and emotionally draining year? Is it even possible?

This year has been a bad dream that I just can’t seem to wake up from. Everywhere I turn, I see or hear something that is truly awful. It causes me to dig deep every day. It forces me to remind myself of all of the things that are still going right, all of the aspects of life that I can choose to be grateful for. If I choose to focus solely on the negative, each day becomes an unbeatable challenge. When I remind myself of the good that is still happening in my life, I am able to reframe my worldview and have a positive outlook despite challenging circumstances.

I believe that if we reframe the way we enter into Thanksgiving this year, we would find that 2020 has brought about a posture of gratitude that allows us to be thankful for the little things. We can be grateful for our health, our family and our homes, where we have spent more time than ever before. We can be thankful for our communities and the people who have supported us through difficulty. Each day, there is still something to be thankful for.

While there is so much drama and turmoil in the world, this Thanksgiving, I challenge each of you to leave behind all of the misconceptions that 2020 has taught us. Instead, embrace this day with those you love and cherish the time spent with them. Make memories, laugh, tell stories you won’t forget because what matters most is the present. We all saw how quickly our worlds can be turned upside down. We have to remember that the only thing that is guaranteed is what is right in front of us.

Decide to enter into Thanksgiving without controversial conversations about COVID, politics, or any other emotionally triggering topic that this year has brought to the surface. Instead, eat, celebrate, laugh and most importantly, be grateful.

I am going to sign off with the things I am most thankful for this year. First and foremost, I am thankful for a God that is in control and who knows what lies ahead, releasing me of any fear or anxiety for what the future holds. I am thankful for my health, my family and my amazing friends. I am grateful for my businesses and all of the talented employees that support the growth and success of my vision each and every day. Don’t forget that while this year has posed many challenges, there is still room to express gratitude. The world needs it now more than ever.
