How to Balance Comfort with Sophistication

At Jackie, we are big proponents of two things, a comfortable, yet sophisticated wardrobe. For some women, they have this balance on lockdown, but for others, it might feel impossible to reconcile these two categories. Maybe in your mind, comfortable equates to your favorite leggings and oversized graphic tee, but sophisticated looks like heels and your favorite LBD; elegant, but not necessarily the picture of comfort.

We want to help you strike the perfect balance. Trust us, when you master this, you will be on your way to transforming your entire wardrobe and the looks you choose to wear day in and day out. We’ve made it easy. Just three simple steps to build your own comfortable, yet sophisticated looks. You can thank us later.

Choose Your Wardrobe Building Basics

You’ve heard us say it before and you will hear us say it again, basics are everything when it comes to building a timeless wardrobe. When you first start investing in your wardrobe, it can be easy to only spend on statement pieces that stand out to you, or seem “worth the investment.” It can be more difficult to justify investing in things like neutral sweaters, tee shirts, leggings, denim and sneakers. Trust us when we say that it is just as important to invest in those basic, wardrobe-building essentials, as it is to spend a little bit more on those bold, fun, statement pieces.

Basics serve as the foundation of your wardrobe. You want those pieces to last, not fall apart with their first wash. Curious to know which basics you should invest in? Click here to read an exclusive blog written by Senior Stylist and Buyer, Sabel Bezet. She discusses simple ways to elevate your collection of basics and which pieces are worth the investment. HINT: It’s time to donate your bargain denim and Target tees. Seriously.

Identify Your Favorite Statement Pieces

This might be the easy part for you. Maybe you jump at the opportunity to flaunt a bold, patterned blouse, or a colorful, statement blazer. For some of our clients, we find that they already have statement pieces in their wardrobe, it's the basics that they need to work on. For others, they have a closet full of this season’s newest statement trends, but no basics to support them.

Note that there are two kinds of statement pieces; timeless statements and trendy statements. Timeless statements should make up the bulk of your statement wardrobe. These might be things like a red heel, a statement tote, or a classic pair of gold hoops. There are also trendy statement pieces, which you can invest in as seasonal trends arise to supplement and support your wardrobe. For Spring 2021, we can’t wait to see more pastels, floral fabrics, and even some vintage tweed making a reappearance. Combine the Two Trends - Combine Statement Pieces and Timeless Basics

This is the fun part. Mastering those elegant, sophisticated, yet comfortable looks is really about marrying your high-quality basics with your favorite statement pieces. At Jackie, we like to think about starting with a basic look. Throw on your favorite pair of jeans, white tee, and Golden Goose sneakers. Then, choose one statement piece to elevate the look. Whether it be a bold, colorful blazer or adding a cozy layer with that gorgeous, fuzzy, pink jacket you just bought. As you become more confident in this process, you can start swapping in multiple statement pieces, like a bold snakeskin boot or a comfortable heel.

The trick is building your look with pieces that are soft, comfortable and won’t slow you down. Then, supplement the look with more sophisticated pieces that elevate your look, but don’t take away from the comfort level. We recommend trying this at home with pieces you have on hand. This will help you identify gaps in your wardrobe. Then, give your Jackie stylist a call to have her help you fill in those spaces with high-quality pieces that will last you for years to come.
